After a short stay at Texas Tech University, he left Lubbock to work on a Defense Department contract, which took him to 12 different countries and more than 40 states. Paul worked painting radar domes on military bases and satellite tracking stations until 1976, when he returned to Lubbock and started a family. He worked at several different jobs until he found himself in a partnership in an industrial paint contracting company, specializing in painting agricultural businesses. He continued painting steel structures and grain elevators until 2015. During the 1990’s Paul began performing his original poetry around Lubbock, and became involved with community theater. He created and performed his one man poetry show for several years, and traveled with different musicians performing at their music events. While living in Mexico in 2012, Paul’s son Clint died of a massive heart attack at the age of 36. Afterwards, Paul struggled for 3 years with major depression. The idea of creating a children’s book from the poem he wrote about his son “The Big Big Man” began in 2018. While looking for an illustrator, Paul was put in contact with Nina Broen from Copenhagen, Denmark. Paul asked Nina to illustrate “The Big, Big Man”, and after seeing the wonderful images that Nina had created, Paul was inspired and quickly wrote three more poems for Nina to illustrate.
