Puerto Rico Lighthouses

STORY SYNOPSIS

“Puerto Rico Lighthouses” is a bilingual English/Spanish flip book that offers a concise history of the indigenous people who lived on the island prior to Christopher Columbus claiming it for Spain. The Spanish government subsequently seized control of the island’s natural resources and enslaved the TaĂno Indians. Following colonization, a plan was developed to construct a fort and a lighthouse to safeguard the island. The lighthouses were strategically positioned to assist in maritime navigation and to defend against potential invaders. This vibrant and visually engaging book aims to inspire further exploration of Puerto Rico, its original inhabitants, historical landmarks, culture, customs, heritage, and traditions.

Reviews:

Puerto Rico Lighthouses by Amparo Medina is a charming and informative book that brings together history, travel, and photography in a very accessible way. Each lighthouse is presented with a concise overview, accompanied by beautiful photos that truly capture the character and scenery of Puerto Rico’s coastline.

I especially appreciated that the book is bilingual (English and Spanish), making it inclusive and easy to enjoy for a wide range of readers. While the historical information is brief, it’s engaging and perfect for readers who want an introduction to these landmarks without feeling overwhelmed. The notes about which lighthouses are active, abandoned, or endangered add an important layer of appreciation and awareness.

This book is ideal for travelers, lighthouse enthusiasts, or anyone interested in Puerto Rico’s maritime heritage. It works well as both a coffee-table book and a practical guide for planning visits. A lovely tribute to these iconic structures and the stories they represent.

A Beautiful Celebration of Puerto Rican Heritage

I absolutely loved this book! Puerto Rico Lighthouses by Amparo Medina instantly transported me to the island’s shores. The photos are so vivid and detailed that I felt as though I were standing right in front of each lighthouse, feeling the ocean breeze and hearing the waves crash.

As a proud Puerto Rican who has visited a few of these lighthouses in person, this book touched my heart. It captures the beauty, history, and spirit of our island perfectly. You can tell the author poured real love and respect into every page.

This isn’t just a book—it’s a piece of home. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Puerto Rico, photography, or coastal history. Absolutely five stars!
