Family Ties II: Blood Covenant

STORY SYNOPSIS

Saving the life of a crime boss in New York certainly has its benefits, as the city is still on edge following the September 11th terrorist tragedy. But ousting the second in command to take the reins of a city-wide criminal enterprise, as Willie quickly discovers, comes with heavy consequences. There are a lot of questions and he’s the only one who knows where to find the answers. Can Willie stay one step ahead of the police? Is it possible to share a bed with the devil and not get burned?

“You might not be under arrest but you’re still a person of interest. The only thing worse than being a murder suspect in this city is being a Black murder suspect,” she pointed out. “Now, it will be really smart of you to get your ass to the closest precinct you can, as fast as you can, and unofficially report that you’ve never officially left town. That way you don’t wind up on a slab as the result of some rookie’s nervous condition or a trophy-seeking veteran officer’s need for another notch in his belt. You need to rethink the seriousness of this situation because I don’t believe you’ve quite realized the harsh reality of it all. It wouldn’t take much for you to wake up tomorrow morning and realize you’re dead.”

Reviews:

B.G. Howard’s Family Ties II: Blood Covenant carries you on a journey through a rough-and-ready reality where power isn’t cheap. What is interesting about the novel is the moral indeterminacy – the protagonist has to find himself faced with a series of difficult decisions. I enjoyed the study of allegiance and survival, and the stakes were very real and serious. The book is a compelling, if not sometimes dispiriting, portrait of the price we pay for ambition.

But the book’s weak spot is the pace. Sometimes the prosaic anecdotes of the criminal underworld stall things. These things are real but can be distracting from the narrative. But Howard’s eye for razor-sharp dialogue and his interest in the social pressures of his characters more than offsets these slower passages. A great read for anyone into dark, character-based crime fiction.

I loved how this book combines intense suspense with powerful storytelling. Willie’s rise to power in New York’s criminal world is full of unexpected twists, and the writing perfectly captures the gritty, dangerous reality he faces. An outstanding crime drama!
